Post by Kyle Wolfe

Today was really fun, We woke up at 5:30 and drove for an hour and a half, on the drive we saw two monkeys, one being the alpha male and the other being his mate. When we arrived we traveled to the Bri  Bri village on a canoe. We learned how to make chocolate and coffee from scratch. We met the president of the Bri Bri tribe and I met a really funny kid. On the way back in the canoe it started raining like crazy. Today I learned that a banana is a herb, the largest herb in the word! Miss you guys!Kyle

Today we went in a canoe to the village of Yorkin and learned about the culture of the Costa Rican tribes. The Bri Bri tribe showed us how to make chocolate and coffee without electricity. We also saw howler monkeys.

Today we went to the beach. We went on a motorized canoe to the rural village of Yorkin. We learned how to make chocolate, and were able to eat it too. We ate it with unripe bananas, which taste like potatoes. On the way to the boats we saw a couple of howler monkeys! The lunch the Bri Bri (The tribe inhabiting Yorkin) was excellent. We had rice, chicken, unripe bananas, beans, and a plant called monkey tail. Turns out the Bri Bri eat fiddleheads!

Hi

It’s wet here. The food is good. I’m having fun.

Beautiful Costa Rica

Costa Rica is very very beautiful! I am  having a wonderful time! Today we went down a river, ate a homemade lunch, make homemade chocolate and hot chocolate, walk in the rain, and get soaked when going back up the river! I am glad I am at Costa Rica!

Hi everyone! Having a great time here in Costa Rica! Today we traveled by Canoe (with motors) in the pouring rain to visit the Bri Bri tribe. There we made chocolate, coffee, and hot cocoa, and the people there made us a delicious meal with rice, chicken, fiddleheads, squash, and palm tree pulp. Tonight we are going to the beach by our hotel to check out the crabs and do some swimming.

       lots of love,

~Merina~:)

I’ll tell you more later, i love you!!!!!!

Brooklyn Park got wet in the rainforest!

This is Mr. Stottlemyer… We’ve had a busy 2 days thus far!  Our first day consisted entirely of travel, however we made it to Costa Rica in great spirits.

We started early this morning to head for the Caribbean coast.  We had a brief ride on the Pan-American Highway, followed by a ride on CR 32 through the volcanic mountain range and over the continental divide.

We arrived at Veragua Rainforest Research and Adventure Park in Limon.  We viewed the canopy from a tram, hiked to a waterfall, and assisted experts in methods that further butterfly understanding.

Hello Parents, Friends and Families~

First...ignore the poor writing...it's late and I'm tired!! So here's the update....
We are having a fabulous time here in Costa Rica! Your little ones (not so little) are having the times of their lives! They have all made friends and are getting along great! I am getting to know the students better each day and am so thankful I get to be a part of this experience with them!! We got up really early today and spent the day with a native tribe. We had to drive about an hour into the rain forest, then we had to get out and hike down to the river. Then we took canoes up the river for about 45 minutes deep into the rain forest. Then we hiked again for about 20 minutes until finally we got to the tribe's main village, right across the river from Panama! We even waived at some Panamanians! The BriBri Tribe didn't speak any English but we brought a translator with us. They speak BriBri which is it's own language. They were very nice and made us a meal. They made us squash, beans and fern (yes, fern...they eat the part that sticks out and curls up!!)! It tastes like green beans. We ate off banana leaves! Then after lunch we helped make fresh chocolate It actually was quite delicious with it's chocolate flavor... It's like no chocolate you've ever tasted!! So fresh and delicious!! They also showed us how they weave their grass huts. They are so tight they were waterproof, even when it poured rain!! But, that didn't keep us dry on our hike and boat ride back! Going down the river there was a torrential down pour and we looked like we had jumped in the river, but it was warm and we had fun anyway. It was quite an experience. Oh, and all the kids got to see Howler Monkeys!! We have some awesome pictures but infrastructure is not great here and it takes forever to upload the photos. We are doing the best we can! Know that we are all safe and having a great time! Your kids are in great hands!! :-)
The kids are trying to post when they can but we have one computer to share and I think I already mentioned the infrastructure issues, right?? ;-) Thanks for all your feedback to them! They love hearing from you!!

P.S. Yes, I agree ;-) We are having a fantastic time!! :-) Kirsten S.

And still more....

NCC’s1st full CR Day (Ms. Moore)

After a scenic bus ride through the mountainous Costa Rican rainforest we arrived at Veraguas, a butterfly reserve/biological station.  In addition to tons of colorful butterflies we saw a sloth, a green and black poison dart frog, and a bird called a Great Potoo.  The kids are definitely ready for a good night’s sleep.  Ms. Vicino used her theater voice to get everyone organized and prepared for tomorrow’s adventures.  We are at a very cute little beach resort that has separate bungalows for all of the guests.  Off to bed for me!
